Over the past several years, I found there were five articles from my blog that became more and more popular. These five got more views, comments and results than any of my other articles. In fact, my first session with clients often focused on these five topics as a way to jump-start training and leadership not to mention helping with owner frustration. I even started carrying copies of these articles in my car to give clients after our sessions. Then, one day, a client made two observations that have stuck with me, and been repeated by a few others as well You know, everything you just taught me is really nothing more than common sense and I really should have been able to figure this out on my own . . . Such a down to earth way to deal with your dog. Easy to follow and easy on me and the pup. Lets us be more comfortable around the house and out in public. I've done lots of books with each puppy and this makes the most sense. Also nice to the dog, lets them be part of the family easily.
I did not know what to expect from this book, but was pleasantly surprised! Treating an animal like we treat a young child is logical, but not something that I had ever even considered! I love the simplicity of thinking from the dog's perspective (!!) -- and taking away the things s/he wants (attention, food, a walk) until they "say please" with their good behavior (sitting quietly), just makes good sense. I was surprised at the end of the book when Mike discusses the amount of exercise a dog requires.... so many people are falling short. I would highly recommend this book. I love that it is short, to the point, and focuses on the BIG stuff -- the things that matter most when introducing a new family member with 4 legs into your home.
I think as pet owners, actually as humans, we tend to over complicate things, making them feel overwhelming, therefore avoiding them. Mike makes dog training into a totally attainable goal simply by making it simple. It actually doesn't feel like "work" when you simply incorporate it into every day life.
My favorite part of the book is the idea of resource control. Total game changer in our house! We have 2 German shepherds, a miniature dachshund, and 3 kids in our house so mutual respect is important. We have been using this idea for a little while now and what a huge difference it has made.
I highly recommend this book to anyone with a dog. If you just want a pet that doesn't double as the Tasmanian Devil or are looking to further your training (search & rescue, show dog, etc.), it seems to me that this is the solid foundation upon which anything can be built.
This book and the theories behind it were SO HELPFUL in training our dogs. It gives you a great background in the basics of obedience training to help shape a well behaved family pet. While I agree with other reviewers that it's not earth-shattering research, the book is a super helpful quick read for people both new to dogs and needing a quick refresher before adopting another pet.
I recommend this to all of my friends who are considering adopting a dog or are having issues with their dog. If you search on YouTube for KISS dog training, you can see the author demonstrating the techniques described in the book, which was really helpful to us in learning the timing of the games for dogs.
This was a short, quick read. I like Mike's style of writing. It was very readable, humorous, and I felt that he had a good tone and pacing.
For those of us who have owned dogs, trained dogs, and read all the dog books it's not groundbreaking material and Mike says as much in his intro. But I will say that he has some novel ideas, such as sit say please, that I look forward to trying with my own dogs. And I think it's a great idea to be proactive and figure out what your own non-negotiable rules are for the dogs in your life and then be consistent, be consistent, be consistent. If today it's okay for them to jump on me because I'm wearing jeans, and tomorrow it's not because I'm dressed up, it just confuses them. How can we expect our dogs to be good dogs if the rules change all the time.
I also really like his philosophy of being a pet dog trainer. No, we're not creating obedience champions, most of us anyway. What we are looking for is a companion animal that is a joy to live with. And I think this book is a good place for pet owners to go to find the basics to create that magical bond between man and dog. I have read more technical books, but if you can't get all the way through the book, or the training instructions are so tedious that you don't do any of it they aren't helpful at all.

If you have been raised around animals of all kinds it's all common since that I already knew. Did not help me at all with behavior problems.
